Halle Berry Cancels Academy Awards Appearance

The Oscar-winning actress was set to present at the ceremony alongside Tom Hanks but pulled out at the last minute, citing her broken foot back in September as the reason.
Oscar darling Halle Berry, who was set to present during Sunday night’s Academy Awards, has canceled at the last minute, according to Academy Awards producer Brian Grazer.
Berry injured her foot months ago while filming Cloud Atlas in September in Spain. According to Warner Bros., the accident occurred while “walking in Majorca on a day off from filming.” People reported at the time that Berry was chasing after her then-3-year-old daughter, Nahla, who was chasing after a goat across the rocky countryside.
Although the injury occurred nearly six months ago, Berry was photographed just last week wearing a brace boot on her right leg.
The actress, while always glamorous on the red carpet, seems to be a klutz on set. Berry broke her arm while filming Gothika during a “physical scene” on set in Montreal, according to a Warner Bros. spokesman. She was also reportedly injured on the set of Catwoman, with reports saying she was taken to the hospital after being hit by a boom.
Berry recently became engaged to her boyfriend of a year, French actor Olivier Martinez, according to jewelry designer Gurhan.

Oscars producer: Baron Cohen’s ‘Dictator’ will appear on the red carpet

http://thenickyquba.com/2012/02/25/oscars-producer-baron-cohens-dictator-will-appear-on-the-red-carpet/

The Academy seems to have recognized that it’s better off with Sacha Baron Cohen at the Oscars than without him. Days after informing the ribald comic actor that his plans for roaming the red carpet as his character from “The Dictator” would not be a good idea, a producer of the show is saying Cohen is now welcome to use Hollywood’s biggest night to plug his movie, to be released May 11.

Whitney Houston investigation: Too soon to tell if drugs involved

Coroners on Sunday completed their autopsy on the body of singer Whitney Houston and confirmed that she was found in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room, but said the cause of death would not be determined until more lab tests were completed.

Ed Winter, assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County, revealed little about the autopsy at a news conference Sunday, but said medical examiners found no visible signs of trauma or foul play.
He declined to comment on various media reports that Houston, 48, had drowned in her hotel bathtub, possibly after succumbing to drugs or alcohol. He added, "I'm not going to comment on any of the meds or prescriptions that were obtained."

I'd just comment that she was found in the bathtub. ... I believe somebody removed her from the bathtub and the paramedics did CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on her."

He said toxicology tests, which would take six to eight weeks to conduct, would be necessary to determine what factor, if any, drugs or alcohol might have played in Houston's death.
On Monday, the Beverly Hills police also worked to keep a lid on growing media speculation about Houston's death.

"As can be expected in a high profile incident such as this there have been many rumors circulating and much speculation by the media and the public," Beverly Hills Police said in the statement. "In order to minimize such speculation, the Beverly Hills Police Department has asked the Coroner's office to place a security hold on their findings until they have a complete and final report prepared."
'Detectives are still probing the death and will release few details until they have completed their inquiry, Beverly Hills Police spokesman Lieutenant Mark Rosen said at a news conference on Monday. "We are not conducting a homicide investigation at this time. We do not know the cause of death, we do not know the circumstances leading up to her death," Rosen said.

The coroner's briefing Sunday came as the Grammy Awards opened a few miles away at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where rapper-actor LL Cool J payed tribute to the late pop star just after the start of the star-studded music show.

"We've had a death in our family and so at least for me ... the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved, for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston," he said.

His brief prayer was followed by a clip of Houston singing her hit, "I Will Always Love You," as the crowd responded with a standing ovation.

Things Not Looking Good For RIM And BlackBerry

On Friday Research In Motion saw the price of their stock drop another 14%, nearly $8 dollars thanks to the poor reception the BlackBerry tablet and the company’s slow response to make technologies available on the iPhone and Android models available to their consumers.  Reports the WSJ:
Recent product launches aimed at bolstering sales have been disappointing. Its BlackBerry Torch, RIM’s first device with a touch screen and a slide-out keyboard, hasn’t been a blockbuster as hoped. And the long-awaited PlayBook tablet launched after a delay, to tepid reviews, earlier this month.  RIM has struggled to react quickly to changes in consumer preferences, especially after Apple unveiled its iPhone, with its snazzy touch-screen interfaces and a bevy of third-party applications.
Analysts also expect a series of new touch-screen BlackBerrys in coming months, including another fresh iteration of the Torch; a touch-screen-only BlackBerry to replaces the flawed Blackberry Storm; and new versions of RIM’s mainstay BlackBerry Curve.  Several new versions of the PlayBook are already planned this year, raising concerns that RIM is stretching itself too thin.  While some RIM watchers have applauded the improvements, some also say they merely put RIM on par with other smartphones, which have long been available.
Who’s a team Blackberry die hard?  Who jumped ship?

Amazon.com Introduces The 69 Cent Song

As the price of music goes lower and lower the Los Angeles Times reports:
Amazon.com, which is a distant No. 2 to Apple Inc. as a retailer of downloadable music, has upped the ante or, rather, lowered its prices to compete with iTunes. The Seattle online company is now pricing select top-selling tunes for 69 cents, down from 89 cents previously. Many of the songs in Amazon’s 69-cent store sell for $1.29 on iTunes, including Katy Perry’s “E.T.”, Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”
Did you know the average person spends about $46 a year on digital music? How much do you spend?

Mike Tyson’s Tattoo Artist Sues Warner Bros. Over Ed Helm’s Tattoo In Hangover Part 2

Uh Oh!  Looks like Mike Tyson’s tattoo artist (S. Victor Whitmill) that gave him his infamous tribal face tattoo is suing Warner Bros. for their depiction of the tattoo on actor Ed Helm’s face.  According to THR:
The man who gave Mike Tyson his distinctive facial tattoo has sued Warner Bros. over the similar-looking facial art on Ed Helms’ character in the upcoming The Hangover: Part II.
S. Victor Whitmill, an award-winning tattoo artist who calls the Tyson design “one of the most distinctive tattoos in the nation,” is asking for an injunction to stop the release of the highly-anticipated comedy sequel, set to bow in the U.S. over Memorial Day weekend.
“When Mr. Whitmill created the Original Tattoo, Mr Tyson agreed that Mr. Whitmill would own the artwork and thus, the copyright in the Original Tattoo,” argues the complaint, filed Thursday in federal court in Missouri and obtained by THR. “Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc.—without attempting to contact Mr. Whitmill, obtain his permission, or credit his creation—has copied Mr. Whitmill’s Original Tattoo and placed it on the face of another actor…This unauthorized exploitation of the Original Tattoo constitutes copyright infringement.”
Warners declined to comment on the suit.

If You’re Going To Spend BIG Money On A Watch, Buy An Audemars Piguet?

In big money talk news, a Forbes writer went inside the watch world at a private event for high net worth people and found out what the experts are saying about who’s hot and who’s not:
“People buy Audemars Piguets to wear them, and they buy other brands to invest in…so a pristine Audemars at auction 20 years from now will be a very valuable piece,” said Sotheby’s head of watches John Reardon. The value of a vintage watch is determined directly by market perception, Reardon said. That’s one reason why Patek Phillipe has sold extremely well in recent years–and why women’s watches have flatlined.
As for Rolex, the brand was conspicuously absent from note, though it did come up at the end of the night during the question and answer session. Feelings were mixed. Robert Ronen, a sales manager for Audemars Piguet, compared the brand to pot. “Rolex is the gateway watch,” he said. “It is the first thing that opens people’s eyes to the high-end watchmaking world. God bless ‘em.”
Shots fired at Rolex, but we’re in the new money crowd and can’t imagine spending $80,000 for a watch…today.  God bless us with a free one for coming to their defense.
